June 18, 2021

The Digital Live Tour promoted by Enel X with the scientific contribution of Enel Foundation and EnSiEL, the  National Interuniversity Consortium for Energy and Electrical Systems, ended on May 18 after three days of sessions between experts, academics and students from all over the country. “Mind the Gaps” unfolded as a roadshow across Italian regions and it actively involved more than 2,000 students from local high schools and universities.

The aim of the project was to fill the gap in schools’ curricula on the Italian electrification pathways, underscoring the social, economic and technological benefits that are connected to them. The workshops were held by key experts from the energy field and academics, and were built so to leave room to the students to fully engage with the conversation at hand. Many key questions were raised and insightful discussions fueled each session, with the speakers taking the pulse of the younger generations’ awareness and with the students realizing the importance of the issues related to electrification. The topics covered were diverse, from the decarbonization targets set by the European Union to the difference between alternating and direct current for charging of electric vehicles, from the use of nanotechnologies in the energy sector to which are the most energy-consuming industrial sectors.

Domenico Villacci, Chair EnSiEL and President MEA (Mediterranean Energy Academy), commented: “I’m confident all the ideas arisen from the discussions with the students will be key to bridge the education gap on the energy transition. The strategic choice to engage both high schools and universities will give us the chance to fully tackle the issue and foster electrification in Italy”.

All students have been invited to take part in the challenge “Propose your ideas and solutions to reduce the educational GAP”. There is no limit to ideas and the closing date for submissions is July 16, 2021.

Christian Zulberti Head of Relations with Universities and Research Centers said: “Overcoming the educational gap in the energy transition space is the goal of the project and, to generate effective and lasting solutions, we need to develop common and shared strategies, involving in the main “stakeholders”, who are university and high school students”

Among the guest speakers that contributed to the Digital Live Tour figured Prof. Aldo Di Carlo, Director of Institute for Structure of Matter, National Research Council (CNR-ISM); Prof. Fabrizio Pilo from Università di Cagliari; Francesco Profumo, President of ACRI - Associazione di Fondazioni e di Casse di Risparmio Spa; and Prof. Piero Salatino, Universita' degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. Prof. Ettore Bompard and Dr. Daniele Grosso from Politecnico di Torino presented the study Electrify Italy, and Prof. Gianfranco Chicco (PoliTo) represented EnSiEL during the sessions.

Our own Christian Zulberti and Anita Del Pizzo also participated, together with Edoardo Bianchi, Alessandro Giampietro, Michele Lavezzi, Luca Pelliccia, and Luigi Antonio Poggi  from Enel X.
