May 20, 2021

The World Energy Council Italia (WEC), together with the Energy Center of the Politecnico di Torino, launched today at an event the Italian Forum of Energy Communities (IFEC), with Enel Foundation as Foundation Partner.

As the profound transformation that the power sector has been going through over the past few years will only be the more efficient if backed by society as a whole, promoting citizens’ cooperative initiatives like the energy communities, is key for a quicker and stronger energy transition. For this reason, the Forum’s mission is to deepen the contribution that the Energy Communities (Renewables and Citizens) can bring to the achievement of the medium-long term energy and environmental objectives set nationally by the PNIEC, the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate, and internationally by the Green New Deal. It also means to share best practices at a local and global level to develop Energy Communities, so to fully grasp their benefits from an energy, economic and environmental perspective.

Enel Foundation will contribute to the research on the energy communities and in particular how a technologically advanced power distribution network can enable them more efficiently. Our Deputy Director Giuseppe Montesano commented, “energy communities represent an important potential added-value for the system, as they can enhance generation from renewables, demand-side flexibility and storage”.

The Forum is open to all energy stakeholders both in Italy and abroad, and it will promote an annual meeting on Energy Communities together with the conferral of a prize for the initiative with the most national traction in terms of technological and social innovation.
