Elemens just carried out a research for Legambiente together with Enel Foundation as Knowledge Partner on the role Energy Communities can play in achieving a deep innovation for the Italian energy system also preserving high quality of service. The results will be presented during an online event on July 20 and fuel a roundtable attended by key figures in the power sector.

The Clean Energy Package that relates to European climate policies particularly highlights specific models of distributed production that aim to achieve a decarbonized economy, sustainable both at an environmental and social level. These models expect energy to be consumed and shared locally by nearby consumers, giving them the possibility – also thanks to well designed incentives – to lower the costs of supply. Energy Communities appear as an innovative and sustainable solution in the power sector to move closer to net zero, involving the highest possible number of social actors while pointing the spotlight on active engagement because of the geographical proximity between energy production and consumption.

At a social level this energy revolution could lead also to a cultural shift, where technological innovations flourish and people show righteous behaviors and interest in gaining the necessary energy knowledge to understand the power dynamics. Members of Communities will be more responsible in balancing production and consumption of energy and there could be cuts in terms of costs, bringing significant economic benefits in compliance with the resilience of the system as a whole.

The research carried out also considers the geographical extension of Energy Communities as a potential success driver and analyzes possible incentives schemes (shared energy vs produced energy). Our Managing Director Carlo Papa will introduce the presentation of the study, later discussed by Tommaso Barbetti, Founding Partner Elemens. The roundtable will be attended by Andrea Galliani, Vice Director “Mercati all’Ingrosso e Sostenibilità Ambientale”, ARERA; Gianni Pietro Girotto, President of the 10th Permanent Commission (Industry, Commerce and Turism) at the Senate; Alessia Rotta, President of the 8th Commission (Environment, Territory, Public Works) at the Chamber; Davide Valenzano, Head of Regulatory Affairs GSE; and moderated by Edoardo Zanchini, National Vice President Legambiente. Sara Romano, Director General for the procurement, efficiency and competitivity of energy, Ministry of Economic Development, will wrap up the event.
