The last event of the “Energy Transition Heroes” 2021 series, launched by IRENA and Enel Foundation, will take place online on December 7. The webinar, titled “Energy Transition to Boost the Fight Against Climate Change: Setting the Future Agenda”, aims to engage young people and to set the future agenda in the fight against climate change through a renewables-based energy transition. Young leaders from across the globe will come together to elaborate on the lessons learned from Pre-COP and COP26 to foster global climate action and energy transition.

This year, COP26 focused on securing a global net-zero target by mid-century and keeping global temperature below 1.5°C. In the run-up of this important summit, during the Youth Pre-Cop in Milan, young energy leaders from all around the world came together to discuss future goals to combat climate change and identify actions to accelerate the energy transition. A lot of work has preceded COP26, and many expectations have been put on this international conference. It is now time to strike a balance. Are young people satisfied with the results of the COP26 negotiations? What are the lessons learned? What are the next steps to boost energy transition and tackle climate change? These will be the core questions that will be addressed during the webinar, building on top of the firm belief that youth is part of the solution and needs to be valorized as such.

Moderated by Lydia Sanz Lozano, IRENA Youth Forum Network, the event will be opened by the remarks of IRENA’s Director General Francesco La Camera and Salvatore Bernabei, CEO of Enel Green Power and Member of Enel Foundation Board of Directors. The opening session will be followed by two ice-breaking speeches from Camilla Born, Deputy Director of Strategy of COP26 and Mira Bergem, Senior Policy Advisor, Permanent Mission to UN, Denmark, and a young leaders’ debate between Sibusiso Mazomba, Implementation Lead of the South African Youth Climate Action Plan; Marinel Sumook Ubaldo, EO Ambassador, YLEAF Co-Founder and Climate Activist and  Ernest Kristoffer Gibson, UN SG Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change, and Rapporteur on Energy Transition at Youth4Climate

The joint IRENA-Enel Foundation Energy Transition Heroes initiative was set up to offer to the younger generations the opportunity to be actively involved in the future of the power sector, enabling intergenerational discussions to foster positive change. After a first event in June, “Addressing Equity and Climate Challenges through Renewables-based Energy Transitions”, a second in July, “Youth Powering Sustainable Energy Technology”, and a third in September, “The importance of international cooperation to address climate change: empowering the role of youth” as part of the “All4Climate” program, this fourth webinar will discuss the next steps for youth leaders to implement the outcome of COP26 and to actively engage to set the future energy transition agenda to boost the fight against climate change.
