Celebrating OAP mid term: closing class of the Florence School of Regulation Course on the Regulation for SDG7

Open Africa Power, the program that every year from 2018 provides a cohort of young African energy professionals with the skills needed to trigger the sustainable energy future for Africa, has now reached the halfway mark of the 2022 edition, co-organized with our partner Sustainable Energy for All and supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

After the African Module, the 8 weeks module organized with the Business School of Cape Town University exploring the fundamentals of the global electricity sector through the lenses of the SDGs, the participants took part in the 5 months course on energy regulation run in partnership with the Florence School of Regulation (FSR), among the academic partners of Open Africa Power Program. This course aims at enabling the participants to gain a comprehensive vision of how to design the appropriate policy and regulatory frameworks needed to ensure sustainable energy for all.

Today we are happy to celebrate the conclusion of the FSR course, ended with a final class held and organized by Professor Ignacio Perez-Arriaga, Part-time Professor at the FSR, Interim Director of the African School of Regulation, and visiting professor at MIT.

Dr. Fabrizio Lobasso, Deputy Director Sub-Saharan Africa, who intervened at the closing class with an institutional message from the Italian Ministry Foreign Affairs, remarked that “We are proud to support Open Africa Power, which fits very well with the mission of our Ministry, looking at the young and very skilled participants as enablers of the clean energy future of the African continent”.

Professor Ignacio Perez-Arriaga commented “We close the 2022 edition of the course with two happy news: The large number of African attendants, grace to the generosity of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the evidence of the large number of young African professionals well-equipped with the fundamentals to address the great challenges of the energy sector of our times”.
