June 7, 2021

Today the Digital African module of Open Africa Power 2021 starts, officially kicking off the 4th edition of this educational program.

The module will be delivered online till the end of July by the Graduate School of Business (GSB) of the University of Cape Town, our partner in this part of the program. In parallel with the digital course started last month by Florence School of Regulation that focused on the role of regulation, the classes within the Digital African module will aim to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the energy sector, its current challenges and opportunities, while also deep-diving in the major issues faced by the power sector. Academics, researchers and experts will share their knowledge and experience on the state of the art of the electricity sector through the lenses of SDGs, addressing technological and regulatory aspects.

After a thorough selection process, the 2021 class sees the gender-balanced participation of 90 outstanding individuals from 28 African countries, nearly half of which holding a PhD or MBA degree. The aim of this program is to empower a new generation of African leaders in order to support them in enforcing the clean energy transition the continent will go through in the next decades. The application was open to all African students, including those African Nationals currently living abroad, but willing to relocate back to Africa, as one of the program’s aims is to contribute to talent retention in the continent.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, said Nelson Mandela. "Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today", said Malcom X. Open Africa Power is a practical example of the wise words of both men cited above. Bright young African men and women using Education as a tool to achieve the goal of bringing modern types of energy to everyone in the African continent. I am proud of being part of this initiative of ENEL Foundation”.

Prof. Izael Pereira Da Silva, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University

The program is at its 4th edition, having been launched in 2018 in collaboration with top academic partners such as Strathmore University and University of Nairobi in Kenya, University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, University of Cape Town in South Africa, and Italian institutions such as Politecnico di TorinoPolitecnico di MilanoBocconi University, Florence School of Regulation, and Venice International University. In 2020 Enel Foundation launched also its partnership with Nelson Mandela Foundation, dedicating that edition to Madiba in recognition of the program’s promotion of sustainable solutions to critical social problems.
