Overview
Marco Gilli (born in 1965, Torino, Italy) is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino (Technical University of Torino). From May 2002 to September 2003 he was Deputy Dean of the First Faculty of Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino and from October 2003 to September 2005 he was Vice Dean of the same Faculty (responsible for the Graduate School).
From October 2005 to February 2012 he served as Deputy Rector (responsible for Academic Affairs) and from February 2012 to March 2018 he served as Rector of the Politecnico di Torino.
He has recently been designated as Scientific Attaché at the Embassy of Italy in the USA and he will take his office on July 2019.
Marco Gilli has been Scholar Visitor at the University of California - Berkeley (Nonlinear Electronics Laboratories - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) in 2002 and 2003 and at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
His research activity is mainly in the area of nonlinear circuits and systems, cellular neural/nonlinear networks, including machine learning, nonlinear network theory and applications and partially in the field of electromagnetic theory. He is co-author of two papers that received the Best Paper Award in 1994 and 2004 from the International Journal of Circuit Theory and Applications. He is also author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications in international journals and in the proceedings of international conferences.
In 1998 Marco Gilli won the Ravani prize, awarded by the Academy of Science of Torino, for contributions to Physics and in particular to Electrical Engineering (in occasion of the centenary of the death of the Italian scientist Galileo Ferraris).
Since January 2005, Marco Gilli has been a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). From 1999 to 2003 he was Associate Editor of the IEEE, Transactions on Circuits and Systems. From 2006 to 2012 he served as Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Circuit Theory and Applications. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Bifurcations and Chaos. In the period 2002-2003 he was appointed Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society. He was elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society, for the period 2006-2008. Marco Gilli is a member of the IEEE-CAS Technical Committee on Cellular neural networks and array computing (Chair from 2007 to 2009) and of the IEEE-CAS Technical Committee on Nonlinear circuits and systems. From 2001 to 2016 he served as the Chair of the CAS Chapter of the IEEE North Italy Section and from 2005 to 2012 he was the President of the Italian Society for Chaos and Complexity.
Marco Gilli has served as General Chair, Technical Program Chair, Track Chair and Special session Chair for many international conferences, including IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), European Conference on Circuits and Systems (ECCTD), International Workshop on Cellular Neural Networks and their Applications (CNNA), International Symposium on Neural Networks.
He has been a reviewer and a referee for international awards (like the ENI – Italian Hydrocarbon Company - award) and for many national and international projects.
From 2012 to 2014 he served as President of CESAER (Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research).
From 2007 to 2010 he served as President of the Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) located in Torino and from 2012 to 2016 he was a member of the Board of Governors of ST-Polito (a consortium participated by ST-Microelectronics and Politecnico di Torino).
He has been a member of the Board of Governors of three private research centers, participated by Politecnico di Torino and Compagnia di San Paolo (a Bank Foundation): HUGEF (Human Genetic Foundation) and IIGM (Italian Institute for Genomic Medicine) since 2009; BOELLA, a research center on Information Technology, from 2016 to 2018; SITI; LINKS (Leading innovation & knowledge for the Society) a technology transfer center, from 2016 to 2018.
He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the ENEL (National Board for Electricity) Foundation and since 2015 he has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Siebel Energy Institute (a university consortium on the application of Big Data/Data Science to Energy systems, including UC-Berkeley, MIT, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Ecole Polytechnique, University of Tokyo, Tsinghua University and Politecnico di Torino).
Marco Gilli has been responsible for many national and international research projects; in his capacity as Rector of the Politecnico di Torino, he was responsible for the partnership agreements with more than 40 national and international companies, including manufacturing industries (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles - FCA , General Motors - GM, General Electric/Avio Aero - GE/Avio Aero, Alenia, etc), Energy industries (ENEL, ENI, TERNA, EDF, State Grid China, etc) and IT industries (ST, IBM, etc). He was responsible for more than 100 international agreements with some of the most prestigious Universities in the world and for the scientific organization of the "G7 Industry" Multi-stakeholder Conference, that was held in Torino-Italy (September 2017) before the G7 Minister meeting.
Marco Gilli is married with Barbara and they have two children, Federica and Edoardo.
