Enel Foundation and ISPI

Enel Foundation is continuing its cooperation with ISPI - Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale. For the third year, the two organizations will be working together on educational activities and youth engagement programmes, providing training for Italian diplomats on the international implications of the energy transition and climate change, and working together to engage young people through the Planet Needs YOUth programme.

Workshop on energy transition as part of We4U

Enel’s annual meeting with Academic Partners, held within the World Energy for Universities Program (We4U), focused on “Energy transition: climate mitigation and adaptation”. The 2023 edition will comprise a series of three workshops exploring energy transition, the first Workshop on 23 March 2023, World Meteorological Day, in Rome, dedicated to the Energy Transition, climate mitigation and adaptation. Other workshops will be held on 13 July and 10 November.
Debunking false myths about renewable energy

Enel Foundation took part in the event “False myths about renewable energy” organized by Italy for Climate, along with key national energy stakeholders such as Legambiente, Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico - RSE SpA and Elettricità Futura. Enel Foundation highlighted trends and facts that are making renewables the cornerstone of secure, affordable, sustainable energy systems.
Open Africa Power begins its journey

Open Africa Power (OAP) began its journey in Italy, welcoming the Top Performers from OAP20, OAP21 and OAP22 in Milan. The program will host the 53 students for a week-long series of visits to Academic Partners, power plants, laboratories and participation in institutional events.

This year’s edition of the World Energy Employment report provides an update on how energy employment has changed in 2022, with a new focus on the skills most in demand in the energy sector.

The White Paper “Consumer Protection and Empowerment for a Clean Energy Future”, written by Consumers International and its knowledge partner Enel Foundation, was presented at the opening session of the Clean Energy Conference, where leaders from business, government and consumer advocacy discussed the importance and implications of a customer-centric energy transition.
Employment opportunities offered by the energy transition

Carlo Napoli, Deputy Director of Enel Foundation, spoke at the event "Green Jobs in the electricity sector: teaching the energy transition, moving towards new job opportunities" organised by Elettricità Futura in Florence, on 8 March. The meeting offered an opportunity to discuss the importance of the energy transition and renewable sources in solving the climate emergency and creating significant employment benefits.
SDA Bocconi and Open Africa Power

The online part of the Italian Module of Open Africa Power 2022 officially ended on 8 March, and Enel Foundation took the opportunity to thank its academic partner SDA Bocconi. Professor Matteo Di Castelnuovo spoke on the challenge of climate change, key drivers in the energy transition, and the impact of clean technologies in the electricity sector.

Enel Foundation launches the 2023 edition of Open Africa Power

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, Enel Foundation launched the 2023 edition of Open Africa Power in collaboration with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL). The programme, aimed at empowering women and youth to lead Africa’s clean energy transition, provides a cohort of young energy professionals with the skills needed to trigger the continent’s sustainable energy future.

Enel Foundation’s Senior Researcher Mirko Armiento took part in the Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee for Electricity organized by Eurelectric, and, with Bruno Idini of the International Energy Agency (IEA), he presented the main findings of the Glass House/World Energy Employment report published last September. Improved tracking of energy employment data and best practices is key to energy employment opportunities in the transition.
Youth4Climate call for solutions

Enel Foundation is supporting the Rome Centre UNDP in empowering young people’s role in the fight against climate change. More specifically, it is promoting the call for solutions by Youth4Climate, offering monetary support for young people who have bold ideas on climate, helping them to implement their proposal.

Study on the benefits of electrifying public transit buses
23 February
Enel Foundation announced the publication of the new study “Valuation of Urban Public Bus Electrification with Open Data and Physics-Informed Machine Learning”. It describes a research project developed by Enel Foundation and the University of California, Berkeley, with the collaboration of Enel X, and it provides an innovative framework for estimating the economic, environmental, and social values of electrifying public transit buses.
Enel Foundation contributes to SAFE’s Master in Energy Resources

Enel Foundation is a knowledge partner for SAFE Risorse con Energia (Resources with Energy), actively contributing to its “Master in Resource Management”, which enables graduates and young professionals to develop skills for the energy transition. Nicolò Sartori, Senior Researcher at EF, delivered a lecture on “Geopolitics and energy markets”, while Carlo Napoli, EF’s Deputy Director, spoke on the green hydrogen supply chain.
The SACE Risk Map reveals the opportunities of the future energy transition

Highlights from the SACE Risk Map 2023, released in cooperation with Enel Foundation, were presented on 9 February 2023. Unprecedented challenges both today and tomorrow highlight sustainability and energy transition as essential priorities in which to invest in order to develop resilience and ensure future growth. Energy transition indicators confirm progressive improvement and indicate the opportunities lying ahead. Enel Foundation’s Managing Director Carlo Papa spoke during the launch event – along with Alessandro Terzulli, Chief Economist of SACE, Nathalie Tocci, Director of the IAI - Istituto Affari Internazionali and other representatives of Italian companies.
The 2030 Plan, opportunities for the Italian supply chain

The increase of renewable generation capacity needed to meet the EU’s decarbonization and energy independence 2030 targets can bring economic benefits of up to €361 billion and create up to 540,000 new jobs. These were the main conclusions of the study "The 2030 Plan for renewable and smart energy: benefits for the Italian supply chain" by Enel Foundation with Elettricità Futura and Althesys, presented in Rome on 8 February. Speakers included Alessandro Marangoni, MD of Althesys, Agostino Re Rebaudengo, President of Elettricità Futura, Francesco Starace, Enel CEO and EF Chairman, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, and Adolfo Urso, Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.

Enel Foundation made a contribution to the Luiss Business School's Master in International Management at Villa Blanc, led by Prof. Raffaele Marchetti. Senior Researcher Nicolò Sartori presented the scientific fundamentals of climate change, describing its key implications on nature, people and businesses, and highlighting the need for international multilateral cooperation to boost climate action.
Second edition of the Italian PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change

Celebrating the UN International Education Day, the second edition of the Italian PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change (PhD SDC), for which Enel Foundation is a Knowledge Partner, was launched, with a workshop on transdisciplinary research for 230 PhD candidates and 52 academic partners at the IUSS - Scuola Universitaria Superiore Pavia.
Start of the Italian Module of Open Africa Power 2022

The Italian module of Open Africa Power 2022, for 150 students from 35 African countries, began on 17 January. With the aim of empowering a new generation of African leaders in order to help them implement the clean energy transition, its Italian academic partners are Politecnico di Torino, Politecnico di Milano and SDA Bocconi. Lectures will look at additive manufacturing, big energy data, network management, marine energy, electrification, and renewables.

In Abu Dhabi, Enel Foundation met a delegation of members from international youth constituencies in preparation for Youth at IRENA13A (International Renewable Energy Agency General Assembly), and attended the event on Renewable Energy Roadmaps for Latin America. In 2021, EF was the first private sector organisation to sign a Partnership Agreement with IRENA, and since then the Foundation has worked with the Agency on youth engagement.

The five Enel Foundation-Fulbright Commission scholarships offer six months in the United States to complete a doctorate dissertation on themes linked to climate change. Enel Foundation organised a webinar to be held on 10 January 2023 promoting this project, part of the long collaboration between EF and the Fulbright Commission.

The switch in foreign direct investment towards renewable energy

Luca Spinosa, Enel Foundation researcher, presented the “Switch Report with fDi Intelligence” at Enlit Europe (29 November-1 December 2022, Frankfurt, Germany), an event for which Enel Foundation was a Knowledge Partner. The speech showed how the analysis of global FDI reveals that sustainability and energy transition are the most disruptive forces shaping international economy dynamics and geopolitics today.

The Italian Forum of Energy Communities (IFEC), for which Enel Foundation is Knowledge Partner, held its Second National Conference on 22 November in Naples. The themes discussed included the legislative framework, organisational models for the creation and management of Renewable Energy Communities and Collective Self-Consumers, the role of energy citizens, and digital management platforms for Energy Communities.
Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy – Position paper release

Enel Foundation announced the Position Paper on Circular Design Criteria by the Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy, an organization for which Enel Foundation is acting as Secretariat and Knowledge Partner. Enel Foundation announces a scientific partnership with Società Botanica Italiana

On the World Science Day for Peace and Development, Enel Foundation announced its scientific partnership with Società Botanica Italiana (Italian Botanical Society). Partners will cooperate on restoration potential by means of tree-based interventions reversing ecosystem degradation as well as ensuring the quality of projects eligible for climate change mitigation under the Paris Agreement.

An event presenting the new degree courses – Ambassadors in Green Technology and Smart Infrastructures – offered by the Politecnico di Milano with Enel Foundation, was held on 8 November in Milan. The 2022 edition of ISPI’s Planet Needs YOUth ended recently. It brought together 500 young people from 43 countries, with Enel Foundation as its scientific partner. The activities included G20 simulation games with the election of forty G20 Ambassadors, participation in the Global Policy Forum, three days of negotiation and the compilation of the final declaration.

The 2022 edition of the Siena International School on Sustainable Development was opened by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, President of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, with an online lecture. The class was entitled "The Economic and Social Impacts of Decarbonization" and discussed opportunities, solutions and implications of the decarbonization process for our society and our businesses.

SACE presented the 2022 Risk Map, in streaming on the digital platform of Corriere della Sera. SACE and Enel Foundation collaborated to elaborate and include in the Risk Map innovative indicators that are not usually considered when assessing country risks. The Map is an essential tool in helping Italian enterprises, especially small and medium-sized ones (SMEs), to sensibly orient themselves when investing in international markets.

Study on distributional effects of EU climate policies
