Enel Foundation's participation at Youth4Climate: Fostering global youth engagement in Climate Action

9 November 

Enel Foundation had the privilege of participating in the Youth4Climate event in Rome. Led by UNDP Rome Centre and the Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica, the event brought together over one hundred talented young people from around the world to discuss climate action and exchange views on ideas to support sustainability. Nicolò Sartori, Senior Researcher at the Enel Foundation, represented the organization in a session focused on private sector engagement. The Foundation displayed current initiatives aimed at enhancing skills, knowledge, and impact of youth to drive national, regional and global sustainable development. The meeting marked a beginning of an impactful journey, with awarded Youth4Climate solutions expected to contribute concretely to a sustainable future.

Launch of the 2023 IEA World Energy Employment Report: Insights on labor in clean energy transitions

Enel Foundation proudly supported the International Energy Agency in crafting its 2023 World Energy Employment Report, the annual publication analyzing labor impacts of clean energy transitions globally. The report highlighted clean technologies are driving job growth in the energy sector, but skills shortages remain a key concern as the workforce transforms.

“Le ragioni del Clima”: A comprehensive review five years after Greta Thunberg's call

15 November 

Legambiente and the Associazione della Stampa Romana hosted a debate reviewing achievements made in the ecological transition five years after Greta Thunberg’s call for climate action. The event was part of Life ClimAction, a project promoted by Legambiente with the Enel Foundation as a Knowledge Partner. Experts and speakers had examined the results of policies at the European, national and local levels, highlighting the role of environmental movements in driving more ambitious and effective climate actions.

Enel Foundation partners with Youth4Climate to drive climate solutions

17 October 

Enel Foundation partnered with Youth4Climate to involve engagement with over 100 young energy leaders from around the world gathered in Rome for a week. The collaboration aimed to amplify voices and catalyze solutions for climate action, energy transition and sustainable development with the joint support of UNDP Rome Centre and Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica.

ClimAction Day webinar series concludes with over 200 participants

20 October 

The ClimAction Day webinar series organized within the framework of the LIFEClimAction project concluded. The initiative had been promoted by Legambiente in collaboration with Enel Foundation as Knowledge Partner, providing training and sharing of best practices for public administrators and local authority officials.

Over the course of the meetings, more than 200 participants attended sessions with experts and discussed about climate change and energy transition. In this context, the outcomes  of the Foundation's studies on energy communities and the results of the research on TCRO for Italian city buses developed together with GREEN - Università Bocconi were illustrated. Energy transition strategic supply chains - industrial roadmap for Europe and Italy

2 September 

The Study "Energy transition strategic supply chains. Industrial roadmap for Europe and Italy" carried out by the Enel Foundation and The European House - Ambrosetti in collaboration with Enel, was presented as part of The European House - Ambrosetti Forum at the press conference attended by Valerio De Molli, Managing Partner & CEO of The European House - Ambrosetti, Nicola Lanzetta, Head of Italy at the Enel Group and Maria Chiara Carrozza, President of Italy's National Research Council (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR).

The Study highlights that, in order to accelerate its transition and decarbonization pathway, the EU and its member states are called upon to develop and implement a new strategic vision.

The research analyzes the development and strengthening of European and Italian supply chains in the sectors of photovoltaic, batteries and heat pumps as a fundamental factor in achieving energy transition targets, securing strategic autonomy and enhancing socioeconomic development in Europe and Italy, in light of the goals set out by the European Commission through the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA).

At the Africa Climate Summit 2023, co-hosted by Kenya and the African Union, the African School of Regulation (ASR) was launched. Supported by the Enel Foundation co-founder and partner, the ASR of which Enel Foundation is co-founder and partner is positioned as a key institution for enhancing African energy policy and regulation.

 NewGen Renewable Energy Accelerator: the training program kicked off

14 September 

22 young innovators and entrepreneurs selected from around the world have started the IRENA NewGen Renewable Energy Accelerator's four-month online training. This program will provide participants with the skills to launch and scale their business plans in the energy transition and climate action sectors. The Enel Foundation, in partnership with IRENA and together with Social Alpha, contributed to designing the training programme and will also empower participants through dedicated mentorship and coaching. The NewGen project aims to accelerate youth-led startups and enterprises in renewables by providing participants with tools and knowledge to deliver ideas to market.

Enel Foundation at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2023

12 July 

As a prominent member and collaborator of the Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition, the Enel Foundation had the privilege to engage with António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2023 in New York. This meeting, conducted under the guidance of Jeffrey Sachs, President of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, fostered an in-depth discourse on the regional challenges associated with the energy transition, set to provide valuable insights for the discourse of HLPF2023.

ITCILO International Labour Organization “Academy on Youth Employment”

10 July 

Luca Spinosa, Researcher at Enel Foundation, delivered a meaningful contribution to the "Academy on Youth Employment" organized by the International Labour Organization's ITCILO. In the "Greening Business" discussion, Luca presented the 2023 SACE Risk Map (http://bit.ly/476iDce), a fundamental research  guiding Italian enterprises, in making investments in the international market. This case study accentuated the indispensability of including non-traditional metrics pertaining to well-being, climate change, and energy transition, thereby fostering a comprehensive evaluation of country risk for businesses and governance structures.

 BIRDIE-S Build the Innovative Renewable and Digitally Inclusive Electrified-Sardinia

BIRDIE-S, an acronym for "Build the Innovative Renewable and Digitally Inclusive Electrified Sardinia", is a research study run by Enel Foundation, University of Cagliari and the Polytechnic University of Turin that has demonstrated the environmental, social and economic benefits, of combining end-use electrification with production from renewable sources in Sardinia.

First 2023-24 Fulbright scholarships awarded

7 June

Enel Foundation assigned the first scholarships of the U.S.-Italy Fulbright Commission-Enel Foundation “Climate Change Scholarship Program” to five PhD students – Antonio Forte, Flavia Marconi, Valentino Gabriel Martello, Elena Mura and Alfonso Pandolfi  – studying at Italian universities. This will provide the young researchers with support for a 6-month stay in the United States in the 2023-24 academic year as part of their doctoral studies.

Welcoming the two Fulbright interns to our research team in Rome

7 June 

Enel Foundation welcomed Camorah King and Mei Butler, the two U.S.-Italy Fulbright Commission-Enel Foundation SAEG (Study Abroad Engagement Grant) interns selected to join our research team, at an event held at Villa Taverna in Rome, hosted by the U.S. Embassy to Italy. Camorah and Mei are American citizens and talented young energy professionals, and they will be working on the Foundation’s energy transition and climate change projects for the next three months.

First Global Youth Energy Outlook programme

9 June

Enel Foundation announced the launch of the first Global Youth Energy Outlook (GYEO) programme, created by Student Energy with DNV and LeadIT, with Enel Foundation as Knowledge Partner. The GYEO surveys the views of people aged 18-30 in 129 countries: 94.2% of this age group prioritize clean energy and climate change on a par with or above other global issues such as health, education, cost of living and gender equality, and 87.2% would like to work in the energy sector.

Call for entries for the 2023 Young Researchers Prize

Applications are opened for the “Premio giovani ricercatrici e ricercatori 2023” (2023 Young Researchers Prize) promoted by Gruppo2003 in cooperation with the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (National Research Council). The award provides support for projects by 10 young researchers. EnelFoundation is Knowledge Partner for the initiative and rewards the winners of the “Climate” and “Energy” categories. The deadline for entries is 10 July.

The annual international summit XVI Symposium COTEC Europe began on 27 June in Palermo, discussing the role of innovation in sustainable finance. PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change

The three-day multi-disciplinary event held in Bologna on May 22-24 for the PhD in Sustainable

Development and Climate Change (PhD SDC) saw the collaboration of Enel Foundation as Knowledge

Partner, and highlighted the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. EF’s Deputy Director Christian

ClimActionDays

18 May

Enel Foundation’s Senior Researcher Mirko Armiento took part in the event ClimActionDays organized by Legambiente, illustrating EF’s study on Total Cost and Revenues of Ownership (TCRO) for Italian city buses. The study shows that electric buses were more competitive than other types of city buses in 2021, reaching break-even in 2022.

ASviS round table on the ecological transition

Study on the benefits of electrifying public transit buses

Enel Foundation announced the publication of the new study “Valuation of Urban Public Bus Electrification with Open Data and Physics-Informed Machine Learning”. The SACE Risk Map reveals the opportunities of the future energy transition

9 February

Highlights from the SACE Risk Map 2023, released in cooperation with Enel Foundation, were presented on 9 February 2023. Unprecedented challenges both today and tomorrow highlight sustainability and energy transition as essential priorities in which to invest in order to develop resilience and ensure future growth. Energy transition indicators confirm progressive improvement and indicate the opportunities lying ahead. Enel Foundation’s Managing Director Carlo Papa spoke during the launch event – along with Alessandro Terzulli, Chief Economist of SACE, Nathalie Tocci, Director of the IAI - Istituto Affari Internazionali and other representatives of Italian companies.

The 2030 Plan, opportunities for the Italian supply chain

The increase of renewable generation capacity needed to meet the EU’s decarbonization and energy independence 2030 targets can bring economic benefits of up to €361 billion and create up to 540,000 new jobs. These were the main conclusions of the study "The 2030 Plan for renewable and smart energy: benefits for the Italian supply chain" by Enel Foundation with Elettricità Futura and Althesys, presented in Rome on 8 February. Speakers included Alessandro Marangoni, MD of Althesys, Agostino Re Rebaudengo, President of Elettricità Futura, Francesco Starace, Enel CEO and EF Chairman, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, and Adolfo Urso, Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.

Start of the Italian Module of Open Africa Power 2022

The Italian module of Open Africa Power 2022, for 150 students from 35 African countries, began on 17 January. With the aim of empowering a new generation of African leaders in order to help them implement the clean energy transition, its Italian academic partners are Politecnico di TorinoPolitecnico di Milano and SDA Bocconi. Lectures will look at additive manufacturing, big energy data, network management, marine energy, electrification, and renewables.

In Abu Dhabi, Enel Foundation met a delegation of members from international youth constituencies in preparation for Youth at IRENA13A (International Renewable Energy Agency General Assembly), and attended the event on Renewable Energy Roadmaps for Latin America. In 2021, EF was the first private sector organisation to sign a Partnership Agreement with IRENA, and since then the Foundation has worked with the Agency on youth engagement.

Over the course of the month of April, students studied some of the Italian FTSE MIB companies, analysing their financial results, sustainability indicators, and equity performances. Siena Summer School on sustainable developments

Duemila30, Film Festival on UN Agenda 2030

Enel Foundation is a partner of the 2nd Edition of Duemila30 -  an International Short Festival for High School and University students, focused on the UN 2030 Agenda and organized in collaboration with the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNric) and United Nations Cinema. The Festival takes place in Milan from September 13-15 within the Milano Movie Week to emphasize the role of education and cinema for the SDG. The international festival to promote the creation of short movies on the SDGs is organized by students of the Quindici19 association.

Enel Foundation Knowledge partner of Charge, an international knowledge and networking platform for energy brands, for their annual Conference and awards event 2019. Partnership aims to help rationalize the evolving changes in the sector placing at the centre of its analysis the relationship with the consumers.
