December 12, 2020

At the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement, with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic amplified by the climate change and environmental degradation, public acknowledgment and understanding of the climate threat represent a fundamental step for the future of humanity. A step that prompted the rise of a worldwide movement that helped youth realize they had a voice in matters related to climate change, encouraging young activists to take the lead in the fight for a better tomorrow.

Federico Brocchieri, listed in 2015 among “the 12 climate activists to follow ahead of COP21” by The Guardian, is an outstanding representative of that generation. A graduate in Environmental Engineering at Università La Sapienza di Roma and in Environmental and Development Economics at Università di Roma Tre, and delegate to the UN’s climate conferences ever since 2011, he published his first book “I negoziati sul clima” with the scientific support of Enel Foundation edited by Edizioni Ambiente. The book, launched and presented on December 12th to celebrate the Paris Agreement’s 5th anniversary, highlights the importance of climate negotiations to increase the level of ambition of global multilateral cooperation on climate, encouraging the empowerment of new generations to boost international action in view of pre-COP and COP26.

Brocchieri is involved in popularizing climate issues via speeches in universities, schools, conferences, TV and radio broadcasts and he’s been working both in Italy and abroad thanks to his experience as technical expert in Italy and EU’s negotiating teams to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - UNFCCC.

“Federico Brocchieri, highly experienced despite his young age, is the author of “I negoziati sul clima”, a book that helps us to understand what is happening to our planet and the answers that we can give through a global collaboration based on multilateral negotiations”.

From the Preface by Michele Crisostomo - Chairman of Enel and Chair of the Scientific Committee at Enel Foundation.

“I negoziati sul clima” perfectly reflects Enel Foundation’s commitment to climate change, recently reinforced with our partnership with Cittàclima Observatory by Legambiente for the release of the cittàclima Report2020. The book aims to reconstruct the story, complex dynamics and future of agreements of climate change, from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - UNFCCC’s birth in the early nineties up to the latest COP, including expectations for the next COP26, postponed to November 2021 due to Covid-19.

“We still have the chance to reduce emissions in order to achieve the world’s most ambitious goals to limit global warming, but we’re running out of time: in order for us to make it we must put in place an unprecedented transformation across all layers of our societies.”

From an extract of “I negoziati sul clima”

With this book Brocchieri tries to raise awareness on the climate issue, reminding us of the chance that humanity has to solve it. Having a focus on the importance of giving a future back to younger generations, it speaks especially to universities and high schools students.
