Powering youth with IRENA

Youth activism has gained momentum over the past few years and is now quickly revolutionizing the way the public, private and societal spheres operate and plan to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Energy plays a key role in this transition as universal access to clean energy is paramount to foster growth worldwide and power services are key to preventing disease and fighting pandemics. In order to properly face these challenges, youths need to be empowered with the theoretical knowledge and practical tools to do it, entering the conversation about the future of the energy sector.

It’s with this objective that IRENA launched its Youth Talk program with the support of Enel Foundation, and in particular the webinar series called “Energy Transition Heroes”. The aim is to offer to the younger generations the opportunity to be actively involved in the future of the power sector, enabling intergenerational discussions to foster positive change in the run-up to COP26.

On July 13 the second meeting of the series, “Youth Powering Sustainable Energy Technology”, will focus on the positive impact of new energy technologies on the living standards of young people, stressing how youth engagement can enable their progress and accelerate both energy transitions and climate action.

Opened by Mr. Dolf Gielen, Director of the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC), and Mr. Carlo Papa, Managing Director of Enel Foundation, the event will feature two ice-breaking speeches from senior experts, Anupama Sen, Oxford Institute of Energy Studies and Nicola Armaroli, Research Director and Member of Italian National Research Council (CNR). They will then leave the floor to a debate between three young energy leaders: Rind Alhage, Focal Point VRE Grid Integration, SDG 7 Youth Constituency; Ujunwa Ojemeni, Development Finance Executive and Open Africa Power Alumna; and Kabir Nadkarni, Climate Finance Advisor, Student Energy, who will share their views on the relations between energy technologies and youth empowerment.
