ESG89 Group held on November 24-25 the Roma 2021 Glocal Economy Forum on the value of economic re-growth, offering a platform for discussion on the most pressing economic issues of today. Enel Foundation’s Deputy Director Giuseppe Montesano attended the event, representing World Energy Council Italia and contributing to the panel on energy and materials sustainability.

Italy's transition towards an increasingly green, resilient and digital economy requires programs and solutions that lead to the infrastructural, technological and professional conversion of entire sectors. It is necessary that the long-term vision is in line with the new ambitious decarbonization goals to stabilize the increase in temperature of the atmosphere within 1.5°C.

The 2030 targets are achievable only through technological progress and innovative solutions that enhance flexibility and digitization as enabling factors. The necessary investments are huge but the costs for the system will be contained thanks to the efficiencies introduced, and the impacts on households and competitiveness can be reduced with redistributive policies and public support.

The transition will be even more sustainable if developed through circular economy models and careful management of materials, combining economic and industrial benefits with environmental ones. Finally, the territorial dimension can be enhanced by energy communities capable of promoting awareness of citizens and consumers with respect to the efficiency of energy production and use.

But the real enabling factor will be a clear and solid governance able to combine public and private dimensions to facilitate investment. At the current pace, Europe and Italy risk missing the 2030 targets, losing the benefits associated to the economic development. Bottlenecks such as plant authorization procedures, fragmentation of competencies, lack of homogeneity in the application of national laws at local level, insufficient capacity of public technical-administrative bodies must be addressed and resolved.
